Walter Heckmann (1929–1994) was a versatile German painter, graphic artist, draftsman, and sculptor. He studied, among others, with Professors G. Ulrich and K. Kaschak. His work is characterized by a strong move toward abstraction and the Informel, while consistently building a bridge between the two-dimensionality of graphics and the three-dimensionality of sculpture.
Heckmann was a longtime member of significant artist associations such as the Darmstadt Secession and the BBK. His works have been shown in numerous solo and group exhibitions both domestic and abroad, and are held in private and public collections. In particular, his print graphics from the 1960s are regarded as exemplary of German post-war abstraction.
