Chevaux dans la prairie, oil painting by Eugen Osswald (1879–1960), Germany, period 1940–1950, original edition, framed.
Description from the seller
Eugen Osswald / Eugen Oßwald
Stuttgart, 1879 - Munich, 1960.
Horses in the Meadow.
Oil signed.
Magnificent work by the German painter Eugen Osswald, also cited as Eugen Oßwald, an artist specializing in animal painting, equestrian scenes, and landscapes with animals. Born in Stuttgart in 1879 and died in Munich in 1960, Osswald developed his career mainly in the Munich area, studying with masters such as Heinrich von Zügel and Angelo Jank, two fundamental figures of German animal painting and equestrian painting at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th.
The work depicts a group of horses in a wide meadow, integrated into a bright, tree-filled landscape. The artist places the animals in the foreground, with several specimens treated with great anatomical care and a sense of volume, while in the background a more distant herd is discernible, which expands the spatial depth of the composition. The scene conveys a sense of natural calm, typical of Central European animal painting with naturalistic and impressionist traditions.
From a technical standpoint, the security with which Osswald resolves the anatomies, attitudes, and coats of the horses stands out. The white horse in the center acts as the visual axis of the composition, contrasting with the brown and dark tones of the other specimens. The brushwork combines precision in the main areas with a more free and vibrant treatment in the landscape, especially in the vegetation, the sky, and the meadow.
The work is fully within the artist’s specialty, recognized as an animal painter, illustrator, and lithographer, with a production focused on horses, cattle, field animals, and scenes of nature. His painting shows the influence of Heinrich von Zügel, particularly in the interest in depicting animals outdoors, integrated into bright and natural environments.
The palette, rich in greens, blues, earth tones, whites, and ochres, lends freshness and depth to the whole. The landscape appears built with a luminous and atmospheric brushstroke, while the horses show a higher degree of definition, evidencing the artist’s mastery in animal representation. This combination of naturalistic observation, pictorial looseness, and luminous sensitivity places the work within the German tradition of equestrian painting at the turn of the century.
A work of great decorative presence and notable pictorial quality, especially interesting for collectors of European animal painting, equestrian scenes, and the German school of the late 19th and first half of the 20th century.
Framed. The frame is included as a gift and is not part of the valuation of the work.
