Éclat de roses, a post-impressionist floral still life from France dating to 1970–1980, oil on canvas, 77 × 67 cm, original edition, unsigned, sold with a frame.
Description from the seller
An attractive European-school 20th-century floral still life, created with a post-Impressionist sensibility, with a loose, textural brushwork and rich chromatic depth. The work depicts a vase with roses arranged in an oval-format composition, with abundant foliage and flowers at varying degrees of opening, creating a scene of notable decorative presence.
The painting stands out for its energetic, impastoed and visible brushwork, especially in the treatment of petals, leaves, and light areas. The artist builds the forms through patches of color and tactile touches, moving away from meticulous description to focus on the vibration of the whole, the chromatic intensity, and the sense of floral freshness.
From a stylistic standpoint, the work belongs to the tradition of European post-Impressionist floral still life, heir to late 19th-century painting and widely developed throughout the 20th century. The composition preserves a classical structure—vase, flowers, and dark background—but the execution is modern and expressive, with free brushwork, marked light contrasts, and a vivid palette.
What stands out is the contrast between the dark background, in bluish and greenish tones, and the luminosity of the flowers, rendered in whites, pinks, yellows, ochres, and peach tones. The central pitcher, treated with warm reflections, acts as the compositional axis and provides balance to the scene. The oval format reinforces the piece’s elegant and ornamental character.
A work of strong visual impact, suitable for collectors of floral painting, European 20th-century still life, and high-quality decorative compositions.
It is framed. The frame is sent as a gift and is not part of the artwork’s valuation.
