Mark Rothko (1903-1970) was a Russian-born American painter and a central figure of Abstract Expressionism. He is best known as a leading representative of the Color Field movement, in which expansive fields of luminous color were used to evoke deep emotional and spiritual responses. Rothko sought to go beyond traditional subjects, aiming to create direct encounters between viewer and paintings that, in his words, addressed the "basic emotions of humanity: tragedy, ecstasy, dissolution."

His artistic journey began with figurative and surrealist influences, but by the latter half of the 1940s he had developed his characteristic style: large-scale canvases with soft, hazy color fields that seemingly drift against subtly modulated backgrounds. These meditative works invited long contemplation and were often placed in immersive, chapel-like environments.

Rothko's paintings are among the most valuable works of modern art. Several have sold for more than 80 million dollars at auction, with one work in a private sale yielding more than 186 million dollars, reflecting their rarity and cultural significance. Collectors and institutions regard them as masterworks of 20th-century abstraction.
