Biography of Giancarlo Montuschi:
Giancarlo Montuschi was born in Faenza in 1952 and began his artistic career at a very young age. A Toscano by adoption (he lives and works in Anghiari since 1976), Montuschi has organized and participated in numerous exhibitions in Italy and abroad. His work shows a direct contact with Pop Art as it breathed in the 1970s and a link with Faenza ceramics, the city that gave him his name. Ceramic work reveals in his pieces a nostalgia for color due to the type of paste and tonal timbres. He is captivated by the world of fairy tales, medieval bestiaries, and then by comic book sagas, especially Flash Gordon. Blue is a favorite color for him, and his blue, androgynous figures with a conical hat, communicating with the starry macrocosm, appear in his works as a trademark and recur throughout his production. Today, with the Astro-Pop series, in a contemporary landscape borrowed from American cinema, elements from a science-fiction-inspired imagination of the 1930s and 1940s merge. The different outcomes he has reached over his fifty-year artistic career are today a true, authentic, great wealth. In 2022, Montuschi began collaborating with Galleria d’Arte Piero Della Francesca, a historic contemporary art gallery that primarily handles his large-format productions, exhibiting in December 2022 monumental works such as 2x2 m and 3x2 m. Below is a reasoned chronology of his life and artistic work, noting that it does not report all exhibitions, but only the most important. 1960 He receives, at a very young age, painting awards in Cesena and at the “Romano Brazzi” in Marina di Ravenna. 1972 He holds his first solo show at Galleria Sire in Faenza. He is then chosen to represent, as the only young artist among twelve painters, the province of Ravenna for the twin exhibition with Rijeka. 1976 He exhibits at Galleria Sire in Faenza. In November, Claudio Spadoni writes a text about Post-Pop regarding the artist’s language. 1986 He participates in the International Ceramics Prizes of Faenza and Gualdo Tadino. Exhibits at De 20 gallery in Vaxjo, Sweden, within a group show dedicated to the Raku ceramic technique. 1987 He takes part in the II World Triennial of Ceramics in Zagreb. He participates with success for the first time in Art Bologna Fair. He is present in several exhibitions including: From Matter to Form, in Reggiolo (Reggio Emilia), curated by G. Baldo and R. Margonari. He is also in the exhibition With the Heart of Art, Arezzo, Sala d’Arte Contemporanea di S. Ignazio, at the Abitare il Tempo Fair, Verona and at the III Festival of Art in Castelnuovo di Farfa. 1988 Awarded at the International Vallauris Ceramics Contest. Solo show at Galleria Selearte, He is present in the Tecné Collective, at Libreria Nanni in Bologna. In this year Marcello Venturoli writes about him. 1989 He participates in the Suzzara Prize, then curated by the best Italian critics, and in the Faenza Ceramic Biennial. Participation in the open-air exhibition “Terre Liberate” in Monteroni d’Arbia, presented by Gagliardi Gallery of San Gimignano, curated by Giancarlo Boiani. 1994 Participation in various events organized by the Firenze-based group “Mano d’Opera.” Participation in the Glass and Art national exhibition of painted and sculpted works on vases produced by Valdarnesi glassworks. 1995 He holds solos in Arezzo (Contemporary Gallery), Città di Castello (Il Pozzo Gallery) and Florence (Ken’s Art Gallery). Participates in Arezzo 95, a collective of the latest generation of Arezzo artists, curated by Michele Loffredo and introduced by Enrico Crispolti. 1996 His adopted hometown, Sansepolcro, dedicates a major retrospective in the spaces of the former Church of San Giovanni, where the Baptism of Piero della Francesca used to be, titled Paths 1976-1996.
