Artist’s Biography:
A painter born in the province of Teruel, in the town of Santa Eulalia del Campo, in 1936. He studied in Teruel and at the San Carlos Academy in Valencia, funded by the Provincial Council of Teruel. Master of contemporary Spanish figurative painting, Agustín had a younger brother, Fermín, who also pursued painting: "He was as realistic as I am, more agreeable, he was more drawn to light, more of a Levantine."
He has his painting studio in Villa Miriam – named after his autistic daughter – located on Leocadio Brun Street in Teruel. He was a teacher at the Las Anejas school in Teruel. It is known that he was a friend and fellow student at the San Carlos Academy of Valencia of Paco Pérez Monleón, sculptor José Gonzalvo, and the sculptor and friend Isaac Rodríguez from Jabaloyas, “an artist with incredible gifts,” according to Alegre.
His painting is based on maintaining figurativeness and exercising meticulous technique in solid drawing and color sense. A romantic atmosphere of his subjects and the handling of bursts of light in contrast with dark masses that recall the Spanish tenebrism of the Baroque are very characteristic of his style.
He has exhibited in Madrid, Milan, Zaragoza and Valencia, among many other cities. He received, among others, the Moncada Award in 1995; the Gold Medal of Benimar in 1957; several City of Albarracín prizes; the First Prize for Outdoor Painting in Logroño in 1969; the Africa Medal at the Africa Painters Exhibition in 1974; the third medal at the National Fine Arts Exhibition in 1976 and the Galerías Preciados Prize in 1977, among others. He received the Gold Medal of the City of Teruel (one of the prizes he is most proud of). A street in Teruel bears his name.
If we had to highlight a single painting, we would choose the Burial of Santa Eulalia, which the artist donated in 1963 to the hermitage of Our Lady of the Mill. This painting is placed above ‘El Coro’ made of noble woods, worked artisanally, at the opposite end of the main altar, kept with care, as is true of everything this emblematic place represents thanks to the effort, dedication, and late nights that the ‘Hermandad de la Virgen’, responsible for maintenance, with all volunteers, carries out with the most tenacious spirit."
