AI-assisted summary

Description from the seller

Oil on panel by Charles Venneman (1802–1875). The work depicts a portrait of a smiling man with a pipe in his hand.

Charles Venneman (Ghent, January 7, 1802 – Sint-Joost-ten-Node, August 22, 1875) was a Belgian painter, specializing in anecdotal scenes, Flemish fairs and landscapes with animals. From 1836 he devoted himself entirely to painting. In 1837 he moved to Antwerp, where he collaborated with Ferdinand De Braekeleer the Elder. Venneman drew inspiration from the seventeenth-century tradition, particularly David Teniers and Adriaen van Ostade, with their lively depictions of peasants and villagers at feasts and dances. His work thus breathes a warm, congenial atmosphere and evokes a nostalgic image of rural life. He participated successfully in the Salons of Brussels, Ghent and Antwerp. His paintings were very popular with the public and were even nicknamed ‘Vennemannekens’ by his contemporaries.
