Official portrait of an Ussaro officer by Scuola austriaca (XIX), in oil, 65 × 53 cm, Austria, 19th century, unsigned, in good condition.
Description from the seller
The painting presents a half-length portrait of an elderly officer, most likely belonging to a hussar regiment, as suggested by the richness and type of decorations on the uniform. The figure emerges from a dark, neutral background, in line with a convention typical of nineteenth-century portraiture that concentrates the viewer’s attention on the face and the attire. The man has white, full, slightly disheveled hair, and a face marked by age, with a direct gaze but veiled by fatigue, almost melancholic. The thin mustache and the lean features contribute to outlining an austere personality, perhaps accustomed to military discipline.
The uniform is the most distinctive element: a dark jacket adorned with elaborate intertwined golden braids typical of the hussars, light cavalry units widespread in Central and Eastern Europe between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. These decorative elements, in addition to aesthetics, indicated rank and belonging to a prestigious corps, often tied to aristocratic traditions. The white collar and the black bow add a formal-elegant tone, while the meticulous rendering of the embroidery reveals the artist’s interest in material and ornamental details.
From a stylistic point of view, the work likely dates to the first half of the nineteenth century, in a milieu between northern Italy and the Austro-Hungarian area, where this type of uniform was particularly widespread. The painting is realistic but not idealized: the face is not beautified, but honestly rendered, allowing the signs of time and experience to emerge. The painting is in good condition, measuring 65x53 cm.
