Garry Winogrand, born January 14, 1928 in New York (United States), died March 19, 1984 (at 56) in Tijuana (Mexico) is a renowned American photographer famous for his portrayal of the United States in the mid-20th century, and the leading representative of the street photography movement.
A pupil of Alexey Brodovitch, Garry Winogrand learned in 1955 of the work Walker Evans did on passersby in the New York subway; Winogrand began his “photographic study of American life.” His subject: the street.
Pedestrian, a passerby himself, he would, for almost 30 years, tirelessly record, in a spontaneous manner, the complexity as well as the banality or the oddities of urban life.
