Description from the seller
Vallés / Valles
Spanish School, 20th Century
Urban View
Interesting oil on canvas by a Spanish school painter of the 20th century, signed Valles in the lower right corner, depicting an urban view with popular architecture, rooftops, balconies, terraced houses and traditional-style buildings. The work stands out for its strong compositional force, its thick, expressive brushwork, and its successful interpretation of light on architectural volumes.
The composition is organized through a succession of stacked buildings placed on different planes, generating a sense of depth and dynamism. Sloping roofs, irregular façades, balconies and the structures in the foreground add formal variety and visual rhythm. The artist builds the scene from solid architectural masses, alternating areas of shadow with areas brightly illuminated by exterior light.
From a stylistic point of view, the work is framed within Spanish urban figuration of the mid to late 20th century, with clear post-impressionist and expressionist resonances. The painting technique moves away from academic detailing to focus on the force of color, matter, and the overall structure of the whole. The brushstroke is loose, direct and visible, especially on the roofs, walls and shadowed areas, where dragging and impasto lend a material character to the surface.
The palette combines ochres, earth tones, whites, grays, purples and blues, with particular prominence given to the warm tones of the roofs and façades. These contrast with the clear blue sky, which illuminates the scene and reinforces the Mediterranean or Castilian feel of the whole. The use of violet and blue-gray shadows adds chromatic modernity and connects the work with a pictorial sensibility typical of Spanish painting in the 20th century.
The work can be related to the tradition of painting villages, old quarters and popular architecture developed by numerous Spanish artists during the 20th century. In this kind of scenes, the urban motif is not just a topographic description but a plastic construction based on the balance between light, color and architectural geometry. The volumes of houses, rooftops and the broken perspectives serve the artist to articulate a living image with strong visual presence.
From an expert reading, the painting shows characteristics compatible with a Spanish production of the 20th century, probably mid- to late-century. The execution reveals professional confidence, with energetic craftsmanship, expressive brushwork and a notable sense of composition. The signature Valles is visible in the lower right corner.
The work has been recently framed, presenting a contemporary light-toned frame with a white inner fillet, which enhances the luminosity of the scene and allows a clean, decorative presentation. As seen in the photographs, the painting shows some minor losses or small gaps, which do not affect the general reading of the composition. The conservation status should be assessed from the images provided.
A highly attractive decorative and collecting piece, especially suitable for lovers of Spanish urban painting, views of villages and the expressive figuration of the 20th century. Its interest lies in the strength of the brushstroke, the architectural dynamism, the chromatic liveliness and the ability to transform a traditional urban scene into a modern, vibrant composition.
