A lot of 17 Paulownia wooden (Kiri-bako) storage boxes, some lacquered, for tsuba and Japanese sword fittings, dating to 1960–1970, with sizes from 10x10 cm to 12x17 cm, in very good condition with functional hinges.
Description from the seller
Lot of 17 storage boxes for Tsuba and Japanese sabre accessories (Kiri-bako and lacquer).
Exceptional set of 17 presentation and preservation boxes for tsuba, kogai, or kozuka. This lot is ideal for a collector looking to showcase their pieces or for a dealer in Japanese antiques.
Lot details:
Kiri-bako (Paulownia wood) boxes: Most boxes are in natural wood, preferred in Japan for their humidity-regulating properties, thus protecting steel from corrosion.
Laquered boxes: 3 elegant boxes in a dark lacquer finish with satin yellow/orange interiors.
Variety of formats:
Standard square formats for tsuba (10x10 cm dark wood, 11x11 cm light wood).
Rectangular formats for other mounting elements 8.5x14.5 cm (fuchi-kashira or menuki).
Two large presentation boxes with red velvet interiors, 12x17 cm (one labeled "Fudoshin" - 不動心, evoking mental steadiness).
Interior colors: Velvet in different colors (imperial purple, moss green, sky blue, scarlet red, and beige), allowing various contrasts depending on the patina of your pieces.
Condition: Very good overall. Some normal signs of use for collectible boxes. Hinge and clasps are functional. (Please refer to photos for finish details).
The last 4 photos show minor defects: one with the bottom split, another with green fabric stained by oil (likely the oldest), one with a peeling edge on the left side of the lid, and in the last there is a small white paint run that should come off easily. All in all, nothing of major concern.
Good luck with your bids and thank you.
