The figure of Christ presented by Pilate to the people after the scourging, has been one of the strongest images of Christian art since the Renaissance, but it is certain that the highest expression of this iconography is realized in the works of Guido Reni, the greatest and most influential of all Italian painters of the 17th century.
Painted in the third decade of the century, this famous depiction exemplifies the unique combination of grace and religious conviction that the great Bolognese genius managed to shape in his depictions of the suffering Christ. He himself was a man of extreme devotion; in these works he avoids portraying Christ with a disfigured face full of human suffering and, refraining from the recurring prototype that emphasizes outward physical pain, highlights his inner spiritual agonies. In this personal process the author deviates from the traditional message of the Ecce Homo, bringing to his subject an intensity and a graceful beauty that since then have represented the Christian imagination of the Passion.
Guido Reni’s “Ecce Homo” remain today among the most famous and recognizable of all his paintings, and the success of these images marks him as one of the cornerstones of ancient painting.
Our canvas, while undoubtedly displaying all the painting characteristics of the various realizations that came from his workshop, constitutes a very rare and interesting variant, slightly differing in the position of the face from the more well-known ones.
The canvas stands out for its painterly perfection and extreme figurative elegance. Time marks are present such as previous frames, small restorations, and some yellowing in certain spots. Also on the back there are signs of prior restorations. The work has recently been cleaned and polished. It is ready to be hung and displayed.
We offer it to the most selective collectors seeking a painting capable of clearly expressing the greatness and fame of its author.
