Emilio Scanavino (Genoa, February 28, 1922 – Milan, November 28, 1986) was an Italian painter and sculptor.
After an initial figurative phase, Scanavino's painting soon assumed post-C cubist characteristics, with the forms progressively stylizing until they dissolved completely in the early 1950s.
In '54, in his canvases began to surface what would become his distinctive signature, namely the stylized knot that would characterize all his subsequent production.
The works of the 1950s are considered among his finest, as one can see in them the genesis of that painterly transposition of interiority with all its torments, which makes his art unmistakable. In his later paintings from the 1970s the "knot" is perfectly delineated and recognizable, declined into unsettling forms, sometimes menacing and stained with blood red.
Although Scanavino is an artist difficult to place in a specific current, he can be considered an informal abstract artist, close to Abstract Expressionism and to the artistic exploration of Hans Hartung and Georges Mathieu.
