Description from the seller

Marc Chagall – "The Rooster" (1947) – Color print, 45 × 60 cm motif, framed, with certificate

The rooster is one of the most enduring symbols in Chagall's visual world. Borrowed from the Russian-Jewish folk culture of his childhood in Vitebsk, it stands for wakefulness, vitality, and the connection between the earthly and the spiritual world. In the turmoil of the 20th century—war, exile, persecution—it became for Chagall the emblem of survival and unbroken creative power.

In "The Rooster" a mighty white rooster dominates the image. Embedded in its plumage is a couple with a bouquet of flowers—as if it protected the tenderness from the outside world. On the right, a woman figure draped in red, below the familiar roof of Vitebsk. The dark background enhances the luminous power of the colors and lends the painting something nocturnal, dreamlike—as if everything takes place between two worlds.

Color print, motif size 45 × 60 cm. Framed with mat, glazed. With certificate.
