Description from the seller

This is an interesting vintage photograph by the renowned Cuban photographer Osvaldo Salas, a 1962 shot depicting the revolutionary Vilma Espín, president of the Federation of Cuban Women, during the protest known as the “Jornada Productiva.” This event was commemorated in Cuba in 2021 in honor of Vilma Espín, who was married to Raúl Castro, Fidel Castro’s brother, and during the period when Raúl Castro served as President of the Council of State from 2008 to 2018.

Osvaldo Salas is among the greatest documentary photographers of the 20th century, famous for his image of Ernest Hemingway with Fidel Castro, as well as numerous photographs of Che Guevara and his reportage across Latin America, Cuba, the United States, and even China. He is also well known for portraits of famous figures such as Salvador Dalí, Maurice Chevalier, Ho Chi Minh, in addition to Che Guevara, Fidel Castro, and Hemingway...

This photograph now for sale depicts Vilma Espín herself picking fruit from a tree; a very beautiful image, well done and also meaningful in conveying the Cuban atmosphere of the period, during which even the top leaders presented a public aspect that reinforced the idea of a “proletarian” ethic and mutual aid that Fidel Castro himself had repeatedly showcased.

A fine vintage photograph, format 24.6 x 19.7 cm, properly stamped on the back by Salas with his old stamp, also featuring two typed descriptions from the era.

Moderate aesthetic conditions, a defect in the upper left corner and a small tear on the left side.
