Description from the seller
This is a watercolor by Corneille, created during his stay in New York in 1976. The work bears the inscription New York ’76. About this series of drawings, Corneille wrote: “All these drawings were made in my hotel room during the months of November and December 1976.”
This work is notable for the presence of the Dalmatian, a motif that Corneille here combines with a nude figure. This gives the composition a playful and personal look that is characteristic of his colorful and imaginative visual language. The work is neatly framed and in good condition.
Corneille (1922–2010) was a co-founder of the CoBrA movement and an important innovator within postwar art. His work developed from abstract to figurative, with recurring themes such as birds, women and flowers.
