Giuseppe Chiari was born in Florence in 1926. After studying engineering, in 1947 he began his musical activity and in 1950 he began to compose. In 1961, together with Pietro Grossi, he founded the association Vita Musicale Contemporanea. With Sylvano Bussotti he coordinated the itinerant exhibition Musica e Segno. From 1962 he became part of the international, interdisciplinary Fluxus group, born in the USA to promote George Maciunas and characterized by alternative behaviors and continuous blurring of the boundaries between art forms. In 1963 his work "Teatrino" was performed in New York as part of a series of concerts organized by Charlotte Moorman and Nam June Paik. He later participated in Gruppo 70, concrete poetry, for the musical component. He published the book "Musica senza contrappunto" in 1969 and "Senza Titolo" in 1971. In 1970 he stopped composing and began an intense activity of concerts, performances, and lectures, which took him, among others, to Berlin, London, Paris, Vienna, Milan, Venice, Rome, New York. His activity as a visual artist has led him to be regarded today as the most important Italian Fluxus artist on the international stage. He died in Florence on May 9, 2007.
