Yoshitomo Nara's paintings, sculptures and drawings, with deceptively simple forms, draw inspiration from the aesthetics of manga pop culture, Walt Disney animation, and punk rock. The artist fills his work with childlike characters who are alternately adorable and sinister, running riot across flat backgrounds rendered with bold, simple lines and solid tones. Nara explores imagination and the individual, and his more complex canvases consider the intersection of figure and ground. Nara earned his MFA from Aichi Prefectural University of the Arts and Music and has exhibited in Tokyo, New York, Los Angeles, Hong Kong and elsewhere. His works are part of the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Rubell Family Collection, the Museum of Modern Art, the Long Museum and numerous other collections. Nara's paintings have sold for seven figures on the secondary market.

Yoshitomo Nara is a major figure in contemporary Japanese art, known for his childlike characters with ambivalent expressions, blending innocence and rebellion. His visual universe, influenced by pop culture and punk, dialogues with that of artists such as Yayoi Kusama, Takashi Murakami or Takeru Amano. On the international stage, his work resonates with Jeff Koons, Damien Hirst or KAWS. He also shares affinities with Banksy, Invader or D*Face, while influencing the culture of objects such as Bearbrick and Richard Orlinski.
