Carlo Domenici, a post-Macchiaiolo painter, was born in Livorno in 1898; at 13 he enrolled at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, making his debut in 1913 at the exhibition of the Society “Amatori e Cultori” of Fine Arts in Rome.
It is probably on this occasion that Pietro Mascagni encouraged him to purchase the painting “Venezia di Livorno.”
He held his first solo show in Livorno.
He joined the Gruppo Labronico, a cenacle of artists formed within the Fattori circle, and, in 1979, he succeeded Renato Natali as President.
In 1926 he exhibited at the Venice Biennale; concurrently he organized a solo show of 40 works at the Galleria Pesaro in Milan.
In 1950 he was among the invitees to the exhibition Fifty Years of Tuscan Painting at Palazzo Strozzi.
He split his time between Florence and the island of Elba, to which he would increasingly feel bound due to its beauty, a precious source of his inspiration.
owing to this strong attachment to the island he founded, in 1946, the “Gruppo Artisti Elbani” and established in Portoferraio the “Llewelyn Lloyd Prize.”
Although developing a personal style based on chromatic variations, Domenici pursued the figurative tradition of the Tuscan masters of the second half of the nineteenth century, arguing that the Academy, without the lessons of Fattori, Lega, Signorini and other painters of that generation, would have served him little.
He organized, with great success, two solo shows at the Cocchini Gallery in Livorno (1958) and at the Pallavicini Gallery in Florence (1973).
Carlo Domenici died in Portoferraio in 1981.
