Description from the seller
Il Ceppo – BRAND HISTORY
Il Ceppo represents one of the most authentic and elegant realities of Italian briar pipe craftsmanship from the Pesaro Marche school.
The origins of the brand date back to the early 1970s, but it is in 1978 that the brand truly adopts an international identity thanks to architect Giorgio Imperatori, an avid collector and connoisseur of Italian handmade pipes.
In 1995 the workshop passed into the hands of Franco Rossi, a craftsman who had collaborated with Bruto Sordini of Don Carlos and with the milieu of the historic Pesaro school also linked to Ser Jacopo and Mastro de Paja.
Il Ceppo pipes are famous for:
- almost completely manual workmanship;
- seasoned briar for long periods;
- excellent smokability;
- careful finishes;
- Italian classical style reinterpreted with strong personality.
Over the years Franco Rossi developed a recognizable style, characterized by elegant lines, large flame surfaces, and sometimes distinctive faceted heads, today highly sought after by collectors.
Production has always remained deliberately limited, with about 1500 pipes per year, many of which are exported to the United States, where the brand enjoys a good reputation among enthusiasts of Italian handmade pipes.
PIPE DESCRIPTION
The specimen shown is an elegant straight billiard of large size, bearing:
“IL CEPPO”
“MADE BY HAND”
“ITALY”
shape E4858
The pipe features:
- a substantial length of about 158 mm;
- a very slender and elegant silhouette;
- splendid vertical natural flame;
- superior quality briar;
- a classic black ferrule well proportioned;
- a large and deep chamber;
- excellent aesthetic balance typical of the Pesaro school.
The stylistic setting recalls the best Italian productions from the 1980s and 1990s:
- sober, functional pipes, but with a strong artisanal character.
The quality of the briar appears very good, with warm and regular grain that enhances the elongated head shape.
Overall condition is very good, with normal light use compatible with a vintage handmade pipe well preserved.
COLLECTOR’S VALUE CURRENTLY
For a Il Ceppo handmade exemplar of this level, 158 mm long, well preserved and with beautiful natural flame, the current realistic market value is:
€220 / 240
