GIOVANNI GRECO was born in Catania, a city where he lives and works. After incomplete studies in biology, and further exploration of artistic studies, he enrolled at the Scuola del Nudi of Catania and in 1980 began his painting activity, starting from the Magritte-inspired example and later the De Chirico one, where it was possible to resolve two apparently contradictory layers, dream and objective reality, into a kind of absolute reality.
At the heart of his research lies a strong drive aimed at resolving the great dilemmas of existence and the relationship between the self and the world, seeking to interpret the “thought” that is sometimes incontrovertible—the artist Giovanni Greco’s ineffable work as a means to cast new light on the fundamental problems our mind cannot stop freeing itself from, staging visual coercions, coercions of the soul; further on, he is drawn to Metaphysical painting and mainly to the works of G. De Chirico, not so much for stylistic choices as for the strong interest expressed in compositional solidity; objects, figures, and even space itself become powerful masses given by dark, thick chromatic volumes within a context where time seems suspended, and the subjects hover between metaphysical influence and neoclassical references drawn from past works shaken by time, in an unknown world.
This is the world of the “éndonèxò,” a term coined by the artist – (éndon-éxò) where the gaze is clearly directed toward oneself and inward into things, yet at the same time it conveys his desire to make his painting nearer to the observer’s lived experience, rising from the depths of the soul and progressively replacing, with new dark forces, the bright and simple spaces of reason.
