Some historical notes: Luigi Monti, nicknamed Monte, was born in Stezzano in 1928 and died in a nursing home in Torre Boldone in 2019. He was an introverted, reserved, prolific, and versatile artist—a painter, sculptor, author of stained glass, mosaics, and ceramics. His works, countless in number, realized thanks to a dense network of patrons, are scattered across cemeteries, churches, museums, public collections (the bust of Torquato Tasso, in the Province) and private collections, public buildings, and public squares, such as the monument to the Ragazzi del ’99 in Loreto. Now, after the Province of Bergamo dedicated Emozioni dal silenzio to him in 2023, with his paintings and those of Stagnoli and Taviani, the time has matured for the first systematic study of his figure. His roots go beyond his native Stezzano and Bergamo to Luzzana, in Val Cavallina, and in the province, also in connection with fellow students such as Alberto Meli.
The realization of this study intention is evidenced by the first retrospective dedicated to him, Il ritorno dell’artista. It is the title of the exhibition that will be inaugurated today (Saturday, June 1) at 2:30 p.m. in Stezzano, at the Palazzo del Comune (the collection of Monte’s works preserved in the municipal art collections is quite rich, including portraits, drawings, cartoons, still lifes, and much more). Also linked is another exhibition, which will be inaugurated today at 5:30 p.m. in Luzzana: about thirty works that will become 45 when, from August 28, the show moves to Bergamo, to the Manzù Room of the Province, until September 8. The shipment is trackable and insured; I should note that the packing will be done professionally, packed with a wooden crate on both sides, in order to protect both sides.
