An American 1950s cinema set. A domestic kitchen set — yellow wallpaper, a white stovetop, checkerboard tile — arranged in the middle of a studio cluttered with 35mm cameras, cables, metal structures. A woman in a floral apron eats a sandwich alone at a kitchen table, during a break. The camera on the left watches her. She ignores it.
The Yack captures the fundamental paradox of cinema: the world’s most elaborate fiction is shot in industrial hangars where people eat sandwiches between takes. This woman is an actress, or a script girl, or a dressmaker — we don’t know. What we do know is that she’s eating and that it’s real, and that everything around her is fake.
