Victor Ruzo, Figuur, watercolour, 1965, original edition, framed, 56 × 46 cm, Switzerland, sold by Galerie.
Description from the seller
Victor Ruzo was a Swiss painter, born in 1913 in St. Gallen. In 1915 his family moved to Zürich, where he grew up and spent his schooling. Between 1928 and 1931 he trained as a stylist and designer of fashion catalogs. In 1934 he married Ria Wedeking, with whom he had four children. She died in 2014 at the age of 99.
From 1931 to 1950 Ruzo, under his own name, worked as a poster designer. In that period he produced about two hundred posters, which gained him international fame. Swiss posters were at the time regarded as particularly innovative and creative, and Ruzo was among the leading representatives of this movement.
In 1945 he moved to Vevey, where he became a neighbour of the famous architect and artist Le Corbusier. Four years later he travelled to the Côte d’Azur. During this stay he received a visit from Pablo Picasso on 2 August 1949. This period proved very successful: Winston Churchill also showed interest in his work, while the American collector Florence Gould offered to take on promoting his oeuvre. Yet Ruzo decided to return to Switzerland, where he began his famous “turning table,” a project he would work on for fifteen years.
In 1956 a book about his work appeared in New York, written by L.P. Kuperman. Victor Ruzo died in 2008 in the canton of Vaud.
