Description from the seller
Platter / bowl, Imari porcelain, c. 19th century – Japan
Material: Porcelain
Style: Imari
Period: Early 19th century
Place of origin: Imari, Japan
Provenance: Private collection
Good condition considering its age and use
Dimensions: 9 x 19 x 19 cm.
Spectacular Imari porcelain bowl made in Japan in the early 19th century, around 1820. White porcelain, coated with polychrome glazes featuring geometric and floral motifs in ochre, cobalt blue, and gold. Imari porcelain is characterized by dense decoration, almost always floral, made to satisfy Western markets, and by the use of underglaze cobalt blue and overglaze red (sometimes green) on glaze, often enriched with gold. The result, therefore, is a highly striking ornament thanks to the vivid chromatic contrast of blue.
Imari porcelain is the Western name given to porcelain products made in the town of Arita (Saga), Japan. Specifically, Imari is the neighboring city from which porcelain was exported abroad through its port. Arita as a pottery center has its origins in the 18th century, when a kaolin deposit was discovered. Since then, porcelain with strong Chinese influence was produced, as before the discovery all ceramics in Japan were imported from China and Korea. Thanks to its high export, the designs of Imari porcelain were decisive in the process of Orientalizing European ceramics at the Meissen and Vincennes porcelain production centers. After the Meiji era, Imari porcelain underwent industrialization and production continues today.
