Kees Salentijn pursued his studies at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam, department of free painting. O.B. Kat is there his most important teacher. Salentijn studies paintings in the Prado in Madrid during his student years, and he stays for several months with a Berber family in Morocco.
In the eighties, Salentijn travels a lot to Spain. He feels connected during this period with artists from various currents who, more or less, advocate spontaneous unconscious creation and do not primarily strive for aesthetic depiction. He combines the lively Cobra visual language with the influences of Spanish culture.
