Description from the seller
Rare limited edition lithograph (edition 25/100) produced by René Gruau titled “Maschera,” a series produced in the 1980s that celebrates the timeless elegance typical of haute couture, printed in limited editions and art lithographs.
Year of creation: circa 1980
Dimensions: Height: 70 cm - Width: 50 cm in frame
Technique: Numbered lithograph
Condition: Generally good condition; note that the red ribbon appears slightly lighter in the lower part, and I do not know whether this is a color feature intentionally left by the artist or a slight variation due to exposure to direct light. It comes framed, with glue marks on the edges due to the packing tape and protective glass, shown in detail in the photos.
Year of purchase: 2007 at the Finarte auction house.
Count Renato Zavagli Ricciardelli delle Caminate, professionally known as René Gruau (4 February 1909 – 31 March 2004), was a fashion illustrator whose heightened representation of fashion design through painting had a lasting impact on the fashion industry. Thanks to his skills and intrinsic creativity, Gruau contributed to a change across the fashion industry by introducing new images that represented drawings already popular among designers in the field. The benefits, including economic stimulation and improved advertising, are still evident in today’s industry thanks to a new form of fashion illustration: fashion photography. Gruau became one of the most renowned and appreciated artists in the world of haute couture during the 1940s and 1950s, collaborating with Femina, Marie Claire, L’Officiel, L’Album Du Figaro, and a variety of “high style” magazines.
Gruau’s works are internationally recognized and praised in some of Paris’s and Italy’s most prestigious art museums, including the Louvre in Paris and the Blank in Italy. In addition to his fame and international recognition, “Gruau’s works are known for their timeless and enduring style.”
The lot will be shipped quickly with appropriate protective packaging and insured.
