Extraordinary oil on canvas from the early 19th century, Andalusian School. The Virgin of Bethlehem is depicted. The iconography of the Virgin of Bethlehem is one of the representations within the Virgins of Tenderness, which penetrates Marian sculpture with great force during the Gothic due to Francisan-root naturalism, which sought to show a normal relationship between a mother and child, thus avoiding portraying Mary as the throne of Jesus. This elevates a loving attitude, as in this case, where the Virgin embraces the Child, and the Child caresses her face.
In this painting, therefore, both are crowned and looking sweetly at the viewer, against a dark and neutral background. There is a predominance of drawing, which defines and outlines the forms. The colors have been applied in a conventional manner, but the shading on the volumes is extraordinary. Notable is the detail of the crowns and the jewels they wear. Carved and gilded wooden frame that enhances the beauty of the work.
