Alfonso Pozzi (1925 – ?) was an Italian painter, active mainly in the second half of the 20th century, known for his expressionist style and his characteristic use of the spatula technique.
Here are the main traits of his life and artistic production:
Biography and Career
• Origins: He was born in Rovescala (Pavia) in 1925.
• Training: He was a self-taught painter, developing a personal style outside traditional academic paths.
• Activity in Milan: He lived and worked for a long time in Milan (his historic studio was on Via Aselli). The city profoundly influenced his poetics, making him a well-known figure in the postwar Milan art scene.
• Recognitions: In 1981 he received the Ambrogino d’Oro from the Municipality of Milan, awarded at the Ambrosiana Academy of Art, testifying to his bond with the city.
Style and Subjects
• Technique: His signature is oil with a spatula. This method gives his paintings a material, almost sculptural texture, with dense layers of color that capture light dynamically.
• Trend: He is often catalogued within the expressionist painterly tradition, where color and application prevail over drawing precision to convey the emotion of the moment.
• Themes:
• Lombard landscapes: Famous are his views of the Navigli and the corners of old Milan.
• Rural subjects: Scenes of the countryside, rivers, mountains, and farmhouses, often rendered with a melancholic or vibrant atmosphere.
• Figures: Rare but present, often placed in urban or work contexts.
Critical notes
Art critics and journalists have written about him, including Mario Portalupi, Walter Alberti, and Antonino De Bono. His works are today present in several private collections and occasionally appear at modern and contemporary art auctions (with estimates generally affordable, typical of local 20th-century collecting).
Provenance: Italian antiquarian market
