ARTIST'S BIOGRAPHY:
Juan Cobos was a Spanish painter born in Madrid in the second half of the 20th century, in a setting marked by the changing light of the city and the constant pulse of urban life. From a very young age, he showed a special sensitivity to reflections on the asphalt, facades wet by rain, and the contrasts between human bustle and the silence of open spaces.
Initially self-taught, Cobos later developed a personal technique in which he combined oil, glazes, and energetic brushstrokes to build almost dreamlike urban landscapes. His work is characterized by a highly recognizable chromatic intensity: bold reds, luminous yellows, and whites that seem to expand like fog or reflections on water. In his paintings, the city never appears cold; on the contrary, it becomes emotional, enveloping, and almost poetic.
Throughout his career, Juan Cobos was especially drawn to wide avenues, rainy nights, and scenes where architecture blends with the emotion of the moment. His compositions are usually threaded with a sense of movement, as if the viewer were looking at the city from inside a memory. That blend of energy and melancholy made his work a singular proposition within contemporary urban-inspired painting.
Cobos exhibited in national galleries and was highly valued by collectors seeking works with decorative strength and atmospheric depth. Over time, his name became associated with expressive, intense, and luminous painting, capable of transforming an ordinary street into a scene charged with emotion.
