Work description:
In this luminous yet poetic portrait, Peter Robert Keil demonstrates his unmistakable ability to fuse personality with spontaneous expressive painting. “Young Berlin Girl” appears modern, direct, and emotionally accessible – almost like an icon of urban metropolitan culture around the turn of the millennium.
The face is reduced to a few powerful shapes and intense color fields: radiant yellow, bright pink, deep blue, and bold black outlines create an extraordinary visual presence. Despite the stylized simplification, the figure possesses a strong individuality and emotional radiance.
The large almond-shaped eyes give the work both attention and calm, while the clear black line work recalls spontaneous drawing, street art, and modern pop aesthetics. In particular, the contrast between the luminous colors and the light background creates an elegant, contemporary effect.
The work fuses the expressive energy of Neo-Expressionism with almost graphic clarity and showcases Keil’s late, reduced visual language of the 2000s.
A painting full of color, youth, and urban modernity.
The composition exudes joy of life, directness, and artistic immediacy – a tribute to color itself and an optimistic statement for any collection.
His artistically gifted mother struggled through the final phase of the war with her son to West Berlin, where they settled after the war. There Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon discovered his interest in painting – particularly in expressionist artists and the works of Pablo Picasso. The painter Otto Nagel, who came from East Berlin, became his mentor from around 1954 and taught him first practical skills and painting techniques.
