Oil on pine board painting titled Pacte avec le Diable by École Romantique Espagnole (XIX), from the siglo XIX period in Spain, in a Classic style, 86.5 × 50 cm, sold with a frame, weight 3.0 kg, unsigned.
Description from the seller
- Oil on pine board.
- Under the dull light of a strange noon in which the parhelion dominates the sky, the knight reins his steed on the edge of the cliff, where the air smells of sulfur and burned rue, emanations rising from the inflamed ground. In front of him, the firmament tears open to give birth to a diaphanous, formless figure, an exhalation of ectoplasm that descends through shreds of fog like a fallen angel invoked in a circle of salt. This scene, an oil painting of febrile, somber romanticism, inevitably evokes the gothic horror of the Wolf’s Gullet in Die Freischütz; here, as there, the dialogue is not a prayer but a pact with the devil sealed in the mountain’s silence. While the horse paws at terror at the presence of the numinous, the encounter recalls the summoning of Samiel, the Black Huntsman, where the metal of magical bullets melts under the influence of forces that the eighteenth century’s reason would call “evil eye” and the nineteenth “diabolical magnetism.” It is the suspended moment in which man, small and mortal, offers his will to a sidereal shadow in exchange for a power that, like all the inheritance of the witches of old, will eventually demand its blood tribute.
- Dimensions of the frameless image: 77 x 40 cm / 86.5 x 50 cm with exclusive custom frame.
