Artwork description:

With this expressive portrait, Peter Robert Keil pays a powerful and at the same time elegant homage to the pop art pioneer Andy Warhol. The work combines expressive spontaneity with iconic pop culture and ranks among the most striking artist portraits from Keil’s later creative phase.

The face appears strongly stylized and asymmetrically constructed – a typical characteristic of Keil’s expressive visual language. The intense juxtaposition of bright yellow, deep black, strong red, cool blue, and pale white creates an extraordinary visual tension and gives the painting an almost electric presence.

Particularly prominent are the oversized eyes and the dark, graphically reduced hairstyle, which immediately recalls Warhol’s iconic appearance. The clear black lines structure the work like a spontaneous drawing and give the portrait immediate emotional power.

The strong color contrast between the light and dark half of the face also evokes stage, photography, and media staging – themes that also shaped Warhol’s own work. Keil transforms the famous artist figure not into a realistic likeness, but into an expressive symbol of modern art culture.

The work reads as a visual dialogue between two worlds: Warhol’s Pop Art and Keil’s Neo-Expressionism.

The composition exudes liveliness, immediacy, and artistic directness – a homage to color itself and an optimistic statement for any collection.

His artistically gifted mother struggled to move to West Berlin with her son toward the end of the war, where the two settled after the war. There Keil grew up in the working-class district of Berlin-Wedding and soon discovered his interest in painting – especially in expressionist artists and the works of Pablo Picasso. The painter Otto Nagel, who came from East Berlin, became his mentor from around 1954 and taught him his first craft skills and painting techniques.
