Oil painting on panel by Dutch artist André Broedelet, dating from 1910 and titled Kinderportret, a classical portrait from the 1900s, 18 × 15 cm (27 × 24 cm with the frame) and signed in the top right, sold with a Gehring frame.
Description from the seller
This oil painting on panel was created by André Victor Leonard Broedelet (Batavia, January 18, 1872 – Leiden, February 14, 1936), a Dutch painter who was best known for his portraits, still lifes and genre scenes. The work shows a small child portrait, a subject that Broedelet painted regularly and in which his sense of atmosphere and character comes through strongly. With great attention to detail and a refined painting technique, he was able to capture his models in a lively and sensitive way.
Broedelet studied at the The Hague Academy between 1889 and 1895, where he was taught by Frits Jansen. In his final year of study he received a silver medal for a painting of a nude model. He then continued his studies at the Academy of Antwerp with the renowned artist Karel Verlat. Between 1900 and 1904 Broedelet was a 'pensionnaire' of Queen Wilhelmina, an important recognition for many promising artists of his time. In 1904 he was awarded a bronze medal at the World's Fair in Saint Louis.
Besides his work as a painter, Broedelet was active in Dutch art life. He was a member of both Arti et Amicitiae and Pulchri Studio, two leading artist associations that played an important role in the Dutch art world at the beginning of the twentieth century.
