Description from the seller
Hello,
I am putting up for sale this exceptional Platinum Mizubashou (水芭蕉), a pen Platinum no longer makes and very hard to find.
The technique: rankaku maki-e
Rankaku maki-e (卵殻蒔絵) consists of inlaying fragments of eggshell into urushi lacquer. The artisan places each shard individually on fresh urushi, selecting fragments for their shape and hue. After polymerisation, protective layers of lacquer are applied on top, then the whole piece is polished until the shell sits flush with the surface. It results in a truly one-of-a-kind object: no other example can have exactly the same arrangement of fragments. The technique and the motif are inseparable: the white fragments reproduce the matte whiteness of the mizubashou flower with a coherence that gold powder could not achieve.
The artisan: Shinonome, urushi tradition of Aizu
The decoration is the work of the Shinonome workshop (東雲), based in Aizu (Fukushima Prefecture), one of the great historical centers of Japanese lacquer art since the Edo period. Shinonome is also the craftsman behind the current Platinum Izumo line, marketed by Platinum with the explicit mention: "work of Shinonome, first-rate Aizu lacquer master." The Mizubashou is the previous generation from the same hand.
Pen in very good condition.
