Il Ceppo – BRAND HISTORY
Il Ceppo represents one of the most authentic and elegant realities of Italian pipe craftsmanship from the Marche school of Pesaro.
The brand origins trace back to the early 1970s, but it is in 1978 that the brand gains a true international identity thanks to architect Giorgio Imperatori, a passionate collector and connoisseur of Italian handcrafted pipes.
In 1995 the manufacturing passed into the hands of Franco Rossi, a craftsman who had collaborated with Bruto Sordini of Don Carlos and with the milieu of the historic Pesaro school also linked to Ser Jacopo and Mastro de Paja.
Il Ceppo pipes are famous for:
- almost entirely manual workmanship;
- seasoned briar for long periods;
- excellent smoking quality;
- accurate finishes;
- Italian classic style reinterpreted with strong personality.
Franco Rossi developed over the years a recognizable style, characterized by elegant lines, large flame-palate surfaces, and sometimes distinctive faceted ends, today highly sought after by collectors.
Production has always consciously remained limited, with about 1500 pipes per year, many of which exported to the United States, where the brand enjoys a excellent reputation among enthusiasts of handcrafted Italian pipes.
DESCRIPTION OF THE PIPE
The shown specimen is an elegant straight billiard of large size, branded:
“IL CEPPO”
“MADE BY HAND”
“ITALY”
shape E4858
The pipe features:
- a substantial length of about mm 158;
- a very slim and elegant silhouette;
- splendid natural vertical flame;
- superior quality briar;
- classic black mouthpiece well proportioned;
- wide and deep chamber;
- excellent aesthetic balance typical of the Pesaro school.
The stylistic setup recalls the best Italian productions from the 1980s and 1990s:
pipes that are sober, functional, but with strong artisanal character.
The quality of the briar appears very good, with warm and regular grain that enhances the elongated head form.
The overall condition is very good, with normal light use compatible with a vintage handcrafted pipe well preserved.
COLLECTOR VALUE AT PRESENT
For a Il Ceppo handmade specimen of this level, length mm 158, well preserved and with beautiful natural flame, the current realistic market value is:
€220 / 240
