Christo & Jeanne-Claude are considered among the most important artists of the 20th century in the field of public art and monumental environmental installations. Their artistic research, developed between Europe and the United States, revolutionized the concept of temporary intervention in urban and natural space through iconic works such as “Wrapped Reichstag”, “The Gates” and “Surrounded Islands”. Their installations, often of ephemeral nature, are today documented and collected at an international level.
“Wall of Oil Barrels – The Iron Curtain”, realized in 1962 on Rue Visconti in Paris, represents one of the first and most famous urban actions by the artistic couple. The work consisted of a barrier made of 240 metal barrels stacked to completely block the street, conceived as a symbolic response to the political climate of the Cold War and to the recent construction of the Berlin Wall. The intervention, with strong visual and political impact, marked a pivotal moment in the birth of contemporary installation art and in the poetics of Christo & Jeanne-Claude.
The present art postcard, published by Taschen in 1995, constitutes an interesting collectible dedicated to one of the most important historical works of late 20th-century contemporary art.
