This collection by Matt Mullican, born in Santa Monica, California in 1951, is a strong example of his conceptual visual language, combining signs, systems, automatic drawing, symbolic structures and abstract calligraphic forms. Mullican is internationally known for his exploration of perception, cosmology, language, diagrams and mental maps, creating works that move between drawing, printmaking, installation, performance and conceptual art. The aquatint technique gives these works a dense graphic quality, with deep black lines and forms standing in sharp contrast against the handmade paper.

The works relate closely to Mullican’s long-standing interest in symbols, cognition and imaginary systems, placing him within an important line of post-conceptual and contemporary art. His graphic and semiotic approach also resonates with traditions of concrete poetry, automatic writing, conceptual mapping and abstract drawing.

Condition: Excellent overall condition. The sheets are clean and well preserved, with only slight printing-related waviness, typical for this type of paper and process. The original portfolio folder is also in excellent condition. Please note that the original portfolio was issued with eight prints; this set contains seven of the eight works.
