Jörg Immendorff was one of the most important German artists of the postwar period. As a pupil of Joseph Beuys at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, he developed a politically engaged and visually powerful artistic language. His works combine social critique, historical themes, and personal symbolism. He became particularly well known for the series of works “Café Deutschland,” in which he thematizes the German division and the artist as a chronicler of the times. Immendorff worked with strong colors, surreal scenes, and recurring motifs such as the monkey, which functions as his alter ego. In addition to his artistic work, he was also a professor, most recently at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. His work remains an impressive testament to the power of art as a political and human expressive medium.
