Description from the seller
Cusco School
Gunner Archangel
Oil on canvas.
Interesting oil painting on canvas belonging to the Cusco school, representing a gunner archangel, one of the most characteristic and recognizable themes of colonial Andean painting. The figure appears full-length, richly attired in courtly and military garments, holding a musket in one hand and accompanied by an elegant ornamental arrangement.
The work stands out for its strong decorative and devotional character, with a frontal, symmetrical composition and a high visual presence. The character is dressed in a dark frock coat richly decorated, puffed sleeves, white lace, a feathered hat, and intensely colorful accessories, elements typical of the Andean Baroque imagination. The combination of European military attire, theatrical ornamentation, and religious spirituality is one of the most distinctive features of this type of representation.
The painting is framed within the tradition of the School of Cuzco, developed in the viceregal realm, where European models were reinterpreted with a very particular local sensibility. The gunner archangels constitute an iconography especially prized, in which celestial beings are depicted as aristocratic soldiers, dressed in luxury and wielding firearms, symbol of authority, spiritual defense, and celestial power.
Pictorially, the work presents meticulous and ornamental execution, with special attention to the clothing, lace, gold details, plumes, and color contrasts. The figure, with a serene and elegant gesture, maintains a solemn attitude, reinforcing the hieratic and devotional character of the composition.
It is presented in a gold frame of strong decorative force, with pierced carving and vegetal motifs or volutes, which very well complements the Baroque character of the work. The frame is sent as a gift.
A highly decorative work with great appeal for collectors of viceregal painting, colonial art, Cusco school, religious iconography, and old painting inspired by Baroque.
The condition should be assessed from the photographs. The work shows signs of age and use, possible wear, craquelure, restorations, or small losses in keeping with its time. The images are an essential part of the description.
