This is a drawing by Leo Gestel in which a man is depicted. It could be a self-portrait. Leendert (Leo) Gestel (Woerden, 22 November 1881 – Hilversum, 26 November 1941) was a Dutch painter, draftsman, and bookbinding designer, and is regarded as one of the most important innovators of modern art in the Netherlands.
Gestel initially developed a luminist style, which he applied in his early landscapes around Woerden. In the following years he experimented with a variety of modern movements, including cubism, expressionism and fauvism. His work is characterized by a strong sensitivity to color, light and composition. Through this continuous artistic development, Gestel took a prominent place within the Dutch avant-garde of the first half of the twentieth century. His oeuvre is now represented in numerous Dutch and international museum collections.
