Permeke, Paul
Sidford (GB) 1918-1990 West-Kapelle
Painter, draftsman, self-taught. Youngest son of Constant Permeke. He left at the age of 16 for Lausanne due to a disagreement with his father about his artistic training. Back in Belgium, he lived for a few years with L. Peire and R. Slabbinck in the painters’ community "Het luizengevecht" in Dudzele. From 1937 he painted scenes in rural villages, caravans, farmers’ balls, fairground scenes and blended elements of impressionism and expressionism into them. From 1960, based in West-Kapelle, he drew his inspiration mainly from the polder region and the restless skies, but he remained faithful to all other themes close to his heart, such as the ordinary person and the farmer. Works, among others, in museums in Antwerp and Ostend.
