Artist Note (Biography)
Léon Gischia (1903–1991) was an important French painter and sculptor, among the most interesting figures of 20th-century contemporary painting. Active in Paris, he co-founded the Salon de Mai. Known for his personal reinterpretation of Cubist motifs and for his masterful use of color, Gischia collaborated closely with masters of stature such as Le Corbusier and Fernand Léger (notably the collaboration on the decoration of the Pavillon des temps modernes at the 1937 International Exposition). He also carried out a very important activity as a stage designer and theatrical costume designer for the Théâtre National Populaire.
