Description from the seller
Since 2015, The Macallan Rare Cask Black has occasionally been available through specialist whisky retailers. The Macallan distillery markets it as an exceptional whisky distinguished by a high proportion of first-fill sherry casks made from both European and American oak. According to the distillery, Rare Cask Black was matured exclusively in sherry casks. A small proportion of smoky whiskies was also used — whiskies produced in a style that had not been distilled since shortly after the Second World War. As a result, this whisky displays subtle smoky notes on both the nose and the palate. The sherry casks contribute abundant dried fruit aromas, while sweet dates, figs, and raisins are accompanied on the palate by spicy notes.
This Scotch whisky is presented in a black-tinted glass bottle that clearly departs from Macallan’s traditional bottle design. It is intended to represent the “dark side” of the Macallan distillery, expressing the smoky and fruity depth of this single malt. The Macallan Rare Cask Black belongs to the “1824 Masters Series.” This should not be confused with the standard “The 1824 Series” or the “1824 Collection.” However, whisky collectors and Macallan enthusiasts are unlikely to be confused by this “series inflation.”
Since 1824, The Macallan Distillery in Scotland’s Speyside region has been producing whisky that for many years was a popular malt component in blended whiskies. It was not until the 1980s that the distillery decided to launch a single malt whisky under its own name — a decision that marked the beginning of Macallan’s worldwide success story.
