Description from the seller
Original painting "Claudia" + Original lithograph "Claudia" (Edition 1 of 20)
Extremely rare bound set by Mark Tobey consisting of the original + lithograph!
The greatest advantage of this collection remains the combination. That the ballpoint sketch exactly served as the Vorlage for the printed lithograph makes the set a highly interesting document of his working process.
Original drawing "Claudia":
- Mark Tobey born 1890 in Centerville, USA - died 1976 in Basel, Switzerland
- From the publisher Gotthard de Beauclair's collection
- Made in 1968
- Female portraits from the side view
- A few individual lines drawn with ballpoint pen
- Signed bottom right "Tobey"
- Mounted on artist's board
- On the back, a study for this image
- Sheet lightly spotted with creases
- Sheet size approx. 21.0 cm x 27.0 cm
- Size of the artist's board approx. 39.5 cm x 48.0 cm
Provenance: From the estate of the heirs of Mrs. de Beauclair. The work comes from the private collection of the publisher, who during his tenure at Insel-Verlag oversaw, among other things, the estate of Oskar Kokoschka as well as works from the milieu of Axel Springer. The provenance and authenticity are therefore unquestionable.
Original lithograph "Claudia":
- Edition of 20 pieces

Mark George Tobey (born December 11, 1890 in Centerville, a small town in Trempealeau County, Wisconsin, United States; died April 24, 1976 in Basel, Switzerland) was an American painter.
Mark Tobey is regarded as a pioneer of American Abstract Expressionism. He is best known for his White Writings, influenced by East Asian painting and calligraphic art, works in light colors with abstract, delicate, network-like structures in mixed media.
