Douceur du rivage is an oil on panel coastal scene dating from circa 1920 by a European impressionist school artist from France, sold with its frame and in an original edition.
Description from the seller
Oil on European school panel, dating from around the 1920s, with an illegible signature at the bottom right and handwritten annotations on the reverse. The work depicts a coastal, intimate scene, with two female figures seated beside the sea, while in the background small boats are visible on the horizon line.
The painting is part of a line of marine genre painting, with influences from late Impressionism and naturalist Post-Impressionism. The scene does not seek a complex narrative, but the capture of a serene, everyday moment: two popular figures resting or conversing near the coast, enveloped by a silent, contemplative atmosphere.
Stylistically, a loose and delicate brushwork stands out, especially visible in the low vegetation in the foreground, in the treatment of the sky and the sea. The color palette is soft and restrained, with bluish grays, ochres, purples, pinks, and earthy tones, creating a luminous yet melancholic atmosphere. This chromatic sensitivity is very typical of early 20th-century European painting, especially in coastal scenes and popular themes.
The composition embodies great sobriety. The two figures are placed in the foreground, integrated into the landscape rather than imposed theatrically. The adult figure, seated on the right, looks toward the young woman on the left, creating an intimate and quiet visual relationship. In the background, the sea and sails add depth and reinforce the maritime ambience of the scene.
The work retains on the reverse old handwritten notes, of unclear reading, which constitute an element of documentary interest. The signature visible on the front is illegible or difficult to identify, so the attribution remains prudently cataloged as a work of European school of the 1920s.
The condition can be assessed in the photographs, which are part of the description. It is recommended to review the images carefully to evaluate the overall condition of the artwork, the surface painting, the panel and the frame.
It is presented framed with a black frame and a gilded inner molding, in keeping with the piece’s aesthetics. The frame is included as a gift along with the artwork.
A piece of notable decorative charm and collector’s appeal, especially attractive to lovers of early 20th-century European painting, coastal scenes, marine genre painting, and intimate compositions with Impressionist influence.
