Information about the original on which this light print is based:
Oil on canvas, Musée Picasso, Paris. The work dates from the classical period of the 20th century, during Picasso’s marriage to the dancer Olga Koklova.
Information about the light print technique:
The light print is an approximately 125-year-old, now no longer used form of stone lithography. By using a rasterless runzel grain and up to fourteen printing passes with specially decades-long lightfast colors, a particularly faithful photographic reproduction could be achieved. This technique is regarded as one of the most refined printing methods and yields a lightfastness that even with modern techniques is no longer feasible.
Due to the time-consuming, fully manual and therefore expensive process, the disappearance of specialized craftsmen and the lack of future prospects, this highly precise printing technique has for about twenty years worldwide been regarded as “extinct” and is no longer reproducible.
Therefore classical facsimile light prints have a special and unique significance within the history of graphic printmaking.
