Description from the seller
La Belle Captive – René Magritte (1968)
A rare and exceptionally atmospheric lithograph from the suite Les Enfants Trouvés, printed (and signed by him in pencil) in 1968 by master lithographer Fernand Mourlot in Paris. This series is among the most beloved graphic works around Magritte, partly because four compositions – including La Belle Captive – were created especially for this project and were executed posthumously according to Magritte's instructions.
La Belle Captive shows Magritte's characteristic play with reality and representation: a scene that is at once familiar and elusive, in which the visible and the hidden continually question each other. The work breathes the poetic tension that Magritte himself described as “the awakening of a dream”.
This lithograph is part of a limited edition of 350 copies, printed on Vélin d’Arches and signed in the stone. The print quality is high, with bright colors and fine detailing that are typical of Mourlot's atelier.
Format of sheet: 44.4 × 60 cm
Format of image: 29.9 x 45.4 cm
A beautiful collector's piece for lovers of Magritte, surrealist art and high-quality graphic art. Works from this suite are internationally valued and are increasingly difficult to find in good condition.
