Paul Flora (1922-2009) - Kaleb und Josua

“Kaleb and Joshua” is a limited-edition print / etching by the Austrian illustrator and graphic artist Paul Flora (1922–2009). Paul Flora is a well-known figure in Austrian post-war art and is especially famous for his fine, expressive line drawings, often marked by subtle humor and irony.

The motif refers to the biblical story of Joshua and Caleb, two scouts sent to explore the Promised Land in the Old Testament. They are traditionally depicted carrying a large cluster of grapes, symbolising abundance, hope, and divine promise.

Paul Flora likely interpreted this scene in his characteristic minimalist line style, possibly with a gentle ironic undertone. Rather than heroic grandeur, Flora’s figures often appear fragile, human, and slightly eccentric — a hallmark of his artistic language.
