Description from the seller
A0000005281
We are auctioning a superb and indisputable classic of American design from the 20th century: a vintage Sheaffer Imperial fountain pen, manufactured in the brand’s Australian division during the fruitful 1960s. This model marked an aesthetic and technical revolution in Sheaffer’s catalog, inheriting the revolutionary fluid lines of the legendary PFM (Pen For Men).
The piece is crafted in a glossy, high-strength black resin, perfectly balanced by a wide gold-plated band on the cap where the official company engraving reads. It presents an imposing and sturdy presence in hand, with a closed length of 13.6 cm and a maximum diameter of 1.2 cm. The cap features the famous gold clip crowned at the top by the world-famous "White Dot" (Punto Blanco), the legendary lifetime guarantee seal and premium quality insignia of Sheaffer.
The heart of this instrument is its spectacular and unmistakable “Inlaid” solid 14-karat gold nib, officially engraved with the inscription "SHEAFFER - 14K - AUST.". This type of nib, fully aerodynamically integrated into the grip section forming a diamond shape, is considered one of the greatest engineering feats in the history of writing due to its perfect structural rigidity and its unparalleled smoothness of line in Fine Point (F). The filling system works with the iconic Pneumatic Touchdown mechanism, operated by unscrewing and extending the rear metal tube to create the internal vacuum.
Condition Report
The conservation status of this piece is Excellent Vintage:
Body and Cap: The resin retains its original mirror polish with a flawless deep black. Free of cracks, fissures, bite marks, or deformations.
Gold Details: Both the clip and the cap band and the butt section show bright, thick gold plating, with no notable metal loss due to wear (brassing).
Mechanics and Imprints: The nib and band engravings are completely sharp and clean. The Touchdown loading system slides smoothly and offers ideal compression.
Curious Fact for Collectors
Although Sheaffer is a brand originating from Iowa (USA), during the 60s and 70s it delegated part of its high-end production to its factory in Australia to supply the British Commonwealth market. For evaluators and buyers on Catawiki, pieces with the nib marked AUST. (Australia) rather than USA are highly valued and sought after in European and international auctions, as their production runs were significantly smaller, adding a scarcity appeal and excellent resale potential.
Auction Closing
A reference fountain pen that embodies Sheaffer’s golden age of precision engineering. Its groundbreaking 14K Inlaid Nib and its pneumatic system make it an essential collectible and an absolute delight for daily professional use.
Wishing you all the best of luck in your bids and an excellent auction to all Catawiki participants!
